Which Is More Carbonated: Regular or Diet Soda?

The Challenge

Develop and test a method for determining whether regular or diet soda contains more carbon dioxide. Decide what information matters and how to make a fair comparison.

Purpose & Teaching Approach

This lab is primarily an experimental-design mystery, not a procedure-driven activity. Students decide how an invisible dissolved gas can be measured and how regular and diet soda can be compared fairly. Give them time to observe, sketch, discuss, and design before testing.
