The challenge
An eggshell seems solid and permanent. What happens when it sits in vinegar - and can you account for the matter you started with?
Purpose & Teaching Approach
Students observe an eggshell reacting with vinegar and build a model for what happened to the matter. The goal is not to guess the correct chemical equation immediately. Students should use sketches, mass measurements, observations, and conservation of matter to explain where the materials may have gone.
