How much space does it take up?
Students investigate a deceptively simple question: How can you measure the volume of an object with an irregular shape? Rather than following a prescribed procedure, students sketch, collect measurements, make an initial estimate, and then use the available tools to develop and test a better method.
The challenge
Finding the volume of a box is pretty easy. Measure its length, width, and height and multiply them together. But most things are not shaped like boxes. How can you determine the volume of an object with an irregular shape?
You have an object and several tools and materials available to you. Your job is to figure out a way to measure how much space your object occupies.
